What are Mid-Drive Electric Bikes?

When visiting an e-bike shop, you will come face to face with an important decision – Should I choose a hub or a mid-drive electric bike? While both motors use sensors to determine an appropriate power boost, they provide a different experience. 

A hub e-bike is older technology – it’s installed in the rear or front wheel hub and directly powers the wheels. If it’s in the front, it pulls the bike and wheel, while at the rear, it pushes the wheel and the bike. 

A mid-drive variant has the motor situated somewhere between the pedals. Instead of powering the wheels, it directly powers the drivetrain, making the experience similar to riding a conventional bike. 

Being lightweight and positioned in the bike’s center, a mid-drive motor provides more stability to riders. However, most mid-drive electric bikes for sale don’t have throttles, meaning there aren’t so many mid-drives that allow riding without peddling.

How To Choose Mid-Drive Electric Bikes?

It’s essential to learn the features of an e-bike before making a purchase. To make a proper decision, here are the five most important factors to consider when choosing a mid-drive electric bike.

Chain

Mid-drive e-bikes directly power the chain and are more powerful than hubs. They can operate the chain at 250 to 750W. However, this enormous power puts the chain in a more vulnerable position. So, it’s best to purchase a mid-drive with a wider and more durable chain. 

Cadence / Torque Sensor

Most mid-drive motors use a torque sensor to activate a power boost. However, they can also use a cadence sensor. The first measures the pedaling power, while the second measures the pedaling speed. Two-wheelers with torque sensors are more expensive but show better results, especially when riding uphill. 

Motor Weight

Mid-drive motors are lighter and more visually pleasing than hubs. Some barely weigh 3 kilograms, while others can weigh up to 25 kilograms. Even though it doesn’t sound much, 20 plus kg is a lot of additional weight to carry while riding, especially if you are a newbie or recovering from a physical injury.

If you are a rider who wants to make the most out of your new vehicle, consider the available ebike accessories. Some popular options are built-in security with battery locks, battery covers, a smartphone-compatible bike computer, lighting and bells, racks, and pedal-assist levels. 

Cost

Mid-drive bikes are more expensive than hub bikes, and high-quality ones typically start at $2,000. However, if you want to save up, you can opt for electric bikes under $1,000, purchase the mid-drive bike accessories separately, and make some DIY upgrades.

Are Mid-Drive Ebikes Worth It?

There are many affordable mid-drive electric bikes on the market. The difference is in the model, cadence, motor weight, and, naturally, the cost.  

Nonetheless, mid-drive electric bikes are worth it, especially for riders who prefer steep terrain, better range, stability, and fast rides. Don’t get us wrong – hub bikes are also fantastic; however, mid-drives have an advantage in these categories. 

Keep in mind that your e-bike’s features and qualities will depend on the shop and manufacturer. The better manufacturers you choose, the more reliable your bike will be.
